After asking Actors Guild of Lexington's Artistic Director, Eric Seale about his upcoming show, SMUDGE, which opens February 6, I discovered the best reason to grab my feller and go see it. My guy is not a big television fan, but he does love NBC's Parks & Recreation...
Seale tells me, "The
play features Marshall Manley (RED, KING LEAR, GONE ASTRAY [Actors Guild]), Cindy Head (A CHORUS LINE [KCT]), and myself. It's a dark
comedy that is both very funny and moving. Very modern. Rachel Axler is
well known as a television writer for shows like Parks & Recreation."
"Cindy
and Marshall play Colby and Nick a young married couple having their
first child. The baby is born with 'a one in a million, undetected
abnormality' never fully specified, but has to stay in a special pram to
live. Nick, a census worker becomes obsessed with how a child such as
his fits into statistics, and Colby deals with her feelings mostly
through eating cheesecake and having arguments with the baby. I play
Pete, Nick's brother and boss for the census. He's a somewhat clueless
overgrown frat boy who is trying to find out why his brother is refusing
to send pictures of the new baby to their overbearing mother while also
dealing with Nick's falling down at work."
Eric adds, "While
the play has serious subject matter it also is filled with humor, from
gallows, to surreal, to absurd. And also manages to find some truly
sweet moments as well."
The play is directed by Chrisena Ricci.
