Regal Ransom Looking for Crown

Another dark horse who has been impeccably groomed (full pun intended) to race in the Kentucky Derby, Regal Ransom is by Distorted Humor (who is the papa of Derby and Preakness victor, Funny Cide) and he out of the mare Kelli’s Ransom. Because Kelli’s Ransom spells the name Kelli the same way my sister does, I have to have a special affinity for this horse. Again, I offer nothing but a gut instinct and a few facts when I favor a colt or filly (or gelding) in a race, so that fact may mean nothing more than me being silly.

Regal Ransom won a Grade II race this year in Dubai and placed second in a Grade III race. before making the journey to Kentucky. He was bought at Fasig-Tipton $675,000, and since this colt has won over $1 million, it is easy to see why his owners have brought him to Churchill Downs for the first Saturday in May. Still, I am thinking a bet across the board would probably be the best way to wager on him.

Jockey Alan Garcia will be on top on Saturday, and trainer Kiaran P. McLaughlin hopes to win for the Godolphin owners.
