West Side Bernie Story

by Kim Thomas

West Side Bernie, along with Atomic Rain will be a longshot in the Kentucky Derby mainly due to race records.

Another wrench in the proverbial machinery is that they’re both trained by Kelly Breen, who is making his Derby debut this year.

West Side Bernie was named because he is a son of the great Irish group winner, Bernstein, and Leonard Bernstein composed the music for West Side Story. Owners George and Lori Hall thought it would be a fun nod to Leonard Bernstein and the great story.
Time Honored, a Gilded Time mare, foaled West Side Bernie in February of 2006 in Kentucky. The dark bay colt has earned a good return for the $50,000 the Halls paid for him as a 2-year-old.

He placed 2nd in the Grade I Wood Memorial Stakes, and with Triple Crown winner Affirmed in his pedigree, West Side Bernie just may have the stamina to win on Saturday at Churchill for trainer Kelly Breen and jockey Stewart Elliott.

pray for peace, y'all,

Kimmy
