ALPHA Licks His Wounds and Heads for Churchill

On his roller coaster journey to the road for the Roses, Wood Memorial runner-up ALPHA will be flown from Belmont into Louisville on April 30 (don't look for him in the Coach section :) -- a week before the Kentucky Derby. There is concern of ALPHA being well enough to race, but his handlers are confident he will be well enough to once again go against winners of stakes and luckily lavish claimers.

Alpha has infected lacerations on his left foreleg -- he got nicked on the first turn of the Wood Memorial, but still came in second place to undefeated GEMOLOGIST.   This son of BERNARDINI won both the Count Fleet and Grade III Withers Stakes at Aqueduct.

The decision as to who will ride ALPHA is still up in the julep aroma atmosphhere building up to the Kentucky Derby.

HANSEN's favorite lad is Ramon Dominguez, but Dominguez is also ALPHA's regular rider.

I anticipate some great jockey will rise to the occasion, it happens every year, and also believe that ALPHA's lacerations from the Wood Memorial are healing up nicely.  He has the great A.P. INDY and SEATTLE SLEW in his papa's side of the pedigree, and that's always a great consideration.
