Say Hello To My Little Friend, Caracortado

CARACORTADO (which translated means "scar face") will start from 9th gate in tomorrow's Preakness Stakes at Pimlico.  At 10 to 1, this chestnut guy is the only gelding in the race, and if all goes as trainer Michael Machowsky expects, CARACORTADO will set the pace for the other horses.  Machowsky said this horse tends to jump ahead of the pack, a scenario that would suit the trainer/part owner just fine in the 135th Preakness.  "I think he'll be on the lead or close to it," Machowsky said.

What I like about this horse:  He's a gelding - that can come into play, especially with all the young fillies nearby - and he knows how to win the longer races. Also, his damsire was MARIA'S MON, who stood at Pin Oak Stud until he died in 2007.  However, MARIA'S MON is currently the leading sire, his progeny have won $3,400,411 just this year and that total received an enormous boost when SUPER SAVER, the bay son of MARIA'S MON won the 136th Kentucky Derby just a few weeks ago at Churchill Downs.
