Christian Care Communities Celebrate 125 Years of Caring

A story worth retelling.

A dying wish brings to life caring communities:

The year was 1871. A young woman lay dying at Louisville’s City Hospital, overcome with sadness, knowing her young son had no place to go, no one to care for him.

“I have loved the church,” she told her past William A Broadhurst, who was at her bedside. “It has been my desire to live to raise my boy that I might see him a Christian, but it is God's will that I must die now. Can I hope some Christian will take my boy? Why have we no home for such as this, like others?”

Rev. and Mrs. Broadhurst took pity on the child and welcomed him into their home, where the Broadhursts and members of the Floyd and Chestnut Street Christian Church congregation cared for him.

With the support of his church members, Rev. Broadhurst went to work to establish a home that would care for widows and orphans from Christian Churches across Kentucky, a home where they would find protection, care and friends.

On May 1, 1884, the dream became a reality, and the Christian Church Widows and Orphans Home of Kentucky opened its doors at 1013 East Jefferson Street in Louisville.

But that’s not the end of the story; it’s just the beginning.

Today, Rev. Broadhurst’s work and compassion lives on as Christian Care Communities, the oldest partner in ministry with the Christian Church/Church of Christ and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and as the ministry has responded to changing needs, it has grown into Kentucky’s largest faith-based, not-for-profit provider of affordable housing and long-term care for Older Adults.

Christian Care’s retirement communities and programs are located in Bowling Green, Corbin, Grayson, Hopkinsville, Lexington, Louisville, Owensboro and Taylorsville.

More than ever, the ministry that began in 1884 is committed to individuals and families who need care – and a place to call home.

Kim,
You write the most endearing pieces. They make me want to cry and smile at the same time. You bring such emotion to your writing which comes directly from your heart. I wait each day to see what you have written.
