Art in Motion Update from Founder, Yvette Hurt

Yvette Hurt, President of Art in Motion (Ace Weekly’s Best of Lex winner for Best Non-Profit Art Organization) is pleased to announce this update for Art in Motion supporters, artists and community leaders:

Artstop, Lexington’s second artistically designed bus shelter, was dedicated August 2, 2009, at the corner of Third Street and Elm Tree Lane. Our turnout was amazing and local jazz/afro-Caribbean band Water set the tone for the celebration on a gorgeous, sunny Sunday.

We’ve received rave reviews about the shelter, the sculpture Lyrical Movement and the temporary murals advertising the mission of the new, outdoor art gallery space.

Credit goes to Andrea James for her leadership, EOP Architects for their vision and professionalism—and most of all—to the people of the East End, who inspired the project by their love of and commitment to their neighborhood.

Stay tuned for the release of a Call for Artists for the art panels.

Our goal is have newly commissioned murals on display at Artstop by the spring.

Look for AIM projects this Friday evening, to be featured in The City Gallery upstairs at the Downtown Arts Center during Gallery Hop. LexArts and the DDA are partnering to feature innovative streetscape improvements in Lexington.

Major grant award: AIM and its partner LexTran has been notified of receipt of a $150,000 in federal funds through the Congestion Management Air Quality (CMAQ) grant program. These funds, with a 20 percent match from LexTran, will help AIM build a number of new art shelters around Lexington. We’ll be meeting with Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials soon about the next steps in the grant process.

AIM’s upcoming shelter projects:

 UK art shelter at corner of Euclid and Linden Walk. With funding provided by UK and Lextran, AIM will announce a national/international design contest soon in partnership with the Aylesford Neighborhood Association, UK and LexTran.

 Newtown Pike art shelter fabrication will start soon. With a donated architectural design and funding from LFUCG’s Corridors Committee and LexTran, Bluegrass will begin soon on Newtown Pike at a location to be determined. Bids will be sought for construction of the shelter.

 Tates Creek Road art shelter is in the planning stages and will be part of planned sidewalk improvements. Stay tune for more details.

If you’d like to make a tax-deductible donation to AIM (which is staffed by volunteers) to help offset administrative expenses and provide matching dollars needed for our grant-writing activities, please send your donations to:
