Mike Smith and MINE THAT BIRD were near the back of the pack at one point, but he took a page from Borel's book by guiding the Derby winner on, weaving the gelding through the other 12 horses, with FLYING PRIVATE following right behind (he would come in fourth, MUSKET MAN a respectable third, just as in the Kentucky Derby). BIG DRAMA tried to keep the pace with the RACHEL ALEXANDRA throughout the race, but he could not prevail against the big girl with the big heart. She led throughout the entire race, and had literally no mud on her at the end of the race.
Jess Jackson expressed to NBC's Bob Costas after the race that he wants to run her in the Belmont, but did not make any promises. It's my hope, and the hope of many, many racing fans tonight that she will run in the Belmont. No, there's not a 'true' triple crown winner this year, but I'm thinking, if a filly wins the Kentucky Oaks, the Preakness and the Belmont, she deserves a crown...maybe it should be called the Triple Tiara. That's my proposal, anyway. Not to worry, all you who love the colts and stallions -- it'll never happen.
Triple Tiara, I kinda like the ring of that!
