On the Seventh Day
Even in the years I was not going to church every Sunday, I observed the Sabbath and kept it holy.
I remember living in Memphis, Tennessee, in the 1970s. I bartended for a living when I was in Memphis, and the Bars were closed on Sunday, so I love swimming all day and enjoying my parents wonderful home on Firefly Cove. Nobody ever said a cuss word and we would take my younger brothers and sister to private Baptist schools that would make the kids memorize a bunch of Scripture. Kelli and Tom would come out of their schools with this dazed look in their eyes, from learning so much, and homework to come home and have to study at night!
So, I learned living down in the Bible Belt that I preferred not to have the religion of Christianity shoved down my throat. I prefer to take my Communion voluntarily, by myself, thank you. But back to the fact that we should not have Sunday be a blowout day...
(Every woman in Memphis has the Avon lady look, btw. They all are constantly smiling, do not curse, makeup is perfect, the humidity is so high you can't get a wrinkle if you try, and Elvis lived there when we moved there. Unfortunately, the lad died in 1976 -– and my son and I saw his ambulance! –- and then we gratefully moved back to Kentucky in 1979.)
At any rate, wherever I worked always made sure I had Sunday off. When I moved to Lexington, the bars were closed on Sunday, too! I think Scotty Baesler might have been the mayor at the time, is that possible?
So, tonight is a good night for a drink or cocktail but who, I wonder is open? I could walk down to Old Hookers Bait and Tackle , where "you're sure to catch something," as owner Maribeth Tolson tells us ... but I don't really feel like walking three or four blocks in the dark. After all, I'm 65 and getting fragile in my old age.
However, The Bar is just a well lit block away, and I wonder if it is open? It would be a good time to celebrate the win of Joseph Biden as our next president of these United States of America.
