ELandF: Lexington native Tom Phillips to Read on Venice Beach Boardwalk on One Web Day

A few years ago, Lexington actor Tom Phillips moved to California to practice his art in Los Angeles and its surrounds, leaving our local theatre scene without one of its favorite leading men. 

Since then, Phillips has worked in a number of films and television shows, yet he still remains close with many of his friends here in the Bluegrass.  As one of his friends, I have to say, he is sorely missed, so I was more than happy to recommend Tom when Bruce Burris, of ELandF Small Projects Accelerator put out the word that he was looking for an L.A. performer to participate in a project to increase awareness about mountaintop coal removal.  

So, I am sure many of his friends and fans will be glad to hear that, soon, we will all have an opportunity to see and hear Tom again, live...well, almost live.  Next Tuesday at 9pm EST, he will position himself at the Venice Beach Boardwalk public webcam and read an essay about mountaintop removal for ELandF.  

(For those who may not be familiar with ELandF, they are the creative folks who brought you the mourners for the destroyed Dame Block -- a/k/a Dudley Webb's wet-dream-turned-nightmare -- as well as the town criers who read Webb's message to the City Council wherein he decried the campaign against him by the so-called 'dirty-bloggers,' a moniker I am proud to claim :)

Phillips will read an essay before the public webcam in Venice Beach, California.  Venice Beach is considered by ELandF to represent the "end of the power grid."

Bruce Burris, founder, states, "ELandF primarily uses public spaces and mostly free technologies for our installations/performances. Venice Beach Boardwalk is recognized as one of the premier public spaces in the U.S.  "About four years ago I began accumulating debris- fragments of poems- strewn about posters- flyers- emails- etc. mostly anonymous- left over from various rallies, workshops, readings, etc.- events related to resisting mountaintop removal.

Tom Phillips spent years in the Lexington theatre community before relocating to Los Angeles. He has worked many times with Actors Guild of Lexington, the Lexington Shakespeare Festival, Phoenix Group Theatre, and others, as well as Kentucky-grown film projects such as "Shadows Light."  He now resides in Woodland Hills, CA, where it's much too hot, carving out an acting career. He is excited about "We Are Mountains Ourselves," and hopes this interesting project will raise awareness regarding both topsoil removal, and the extraordinary things ordinary people can do through an unfettered internet.

Another well-received project from Bruce Burris and his ELandF-ers happened a few months ago, when Sunny Montgomery, the popular Holler Poet Series writer and winner of the Ace Weekly Worst Summer Job essay competition, was selected to read her musings to eight nursing homes in eight hours. 

Sunny's humorous style and presentation was more than a moderate success, as even the local daily newspaper got wind of it and posted a blog, with photos, about the event.   As always, Sunny delivered and warmed the hearts of many people that day, winding up her 8-hour visitation marathon at Morris Book Shope for the final reading of the day.  I have always been fond of Sunny since the day I met her and after hearing her read at Holler back in February, I knew she was bound for great things.  She is a fantastic writer and her humor is boundless. 


So you can imagine my delight when I learned that Sunny will also be participating in the mountaintop removal awareness event, too, right here in Lexington, next Tuesday, September 22, which is One Web Day.  Join the ELandF Small Projects Accelerator group and watch on the web or gather at Institute 193, Lexington's new art space, 193 North Limestone St.(next to Le Deauville Restaurant) to hear the message of  "We Are Mountains Ourselves...found fragments from some of those who resist Mountaintop Removal."
