PIONEER OF THE NILE (son of 2003 Belmont Stakes winner, EMPIRE MAKER and out of the mare STAR OF GOSHEN; Bob Baffert, trainer), has been all the buzz ever since I first took up blogging back in February.
I know, I know, it's not a long long period of time, just a few months, but let me just tell y'all, this blogging thing is like having pet rock that cries. It's just that easy to ignore, and it's also just that difficult to ignore, all at the same time. Sure, nothing's really going to 'suffer' if I don't blog every day, but eventually, the Guilt creeps in like an ex-booty boy with a key to your apartment: You're kind of glad he's out of sight, but he's never really out of your mind. And you want your keys back...kinda.
What does all this have to do with the Preakness? Well, PIONEER OF THE NILE is like that. You sort of like him, but then again, he's a pain in the ass. He looks good on paper, but he hasn't really come through when you've really needed him. Plus, I'm awfully sorry for you who are fans of his, but Bob Baffert is not necessarily my favorite trainer. He's arrogant; he thinks he's dashing; and well...he's arrogant. Oh. I said that already, didn't I?
However, I will not hold that against the horse. PIONEER OF THE NILE has fought the good fight; he's gorgeous, he's shown his ability to place and/or win in many a race against many a good horse. Perhaps tomorrow, the Pimlico track will be kind to him, and he'll bring home the Black Eyed Susans. If so, I'll embrace him with all the love I possibly can give to a colt who's already won over $1.5 million. Yeeps.
Pioneer of the Nile was definitely on a roll pre-Derby, but he will now have to have the race of his life to prevail in the Preakness.
pray for peace in the Preakness, y'all,
Kimmy
