Win Willy Could Win the Derby

by Kim Thomas

Win Willy is the 56-1 longshot that beat Old Fashioned in the Grade II Rebel Stakes back in mid-March (but he finished fourth in the Arkansas Derby on April 11). Trained by McLean Robertson, this colt was in last place after the half-mile mark in the Rebel Stakes.

Win Willy’s mare is stakes winner City Fair and 2001 Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos is his sire.

*This is the first installment of blogs that will tell you the short story of each horse that is running for the roses on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at Churchill Downs. I will try to keep their descriptions short, sweet and to the point. I hope you have your mint source ready as well as a bottle of Kentucky Bourbon so you can enjoy a Mint Julep on Derby Day as the world listens to My Old Kentucky Home as the horses begin their pre-race parade.

Cheers, peace and...they're off!
Kimmy
